Description
ROLE
The Clinical Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team working in the capacity of an unregulated care provider. As a Clinical Extern, you will have the opportunity to develop your clinical knowledge and skills while providing direct and indirect patient care in a mentored and supportive team environment. You will be part of the interprofessional healthcare team, supporting high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience.
You will be coordinated centrally but dedicated to specific units to support a consistent work environment and promote integration into the clinical team.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To assist registered staff with patient care.
- Report any issues, concerns, patient changes in a timely fashion to the RN, or in the absence of a RN, to the RPN.
- Assist patients with repositioning, ambulating and transferring after receiving appropriate education by Rehab. Staff and/or Nurses and as per hospital policy
- Be familiar with and able to operate safely the various assistive devices, such as bath chairs, specialized mattresses, and mechanical lifts as per hospital policy.
- Assist with dietary needs of patients; assist with feeding, retrieving of meal trays, recording intake accurately.
- Be aware of and practice Isolation procedures.
- Provide measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries.
- Assist with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards.
- Demonstrate excellent problem‐solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrate excellent organizational and time‐management skills
- Update white boards
- Request assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
- Participate as a team member
- Maintain dignity and self‐esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
- Practice patient privacy and confidentiality
- Practice behaviours consistent with the mission, vision and values of their Employer
REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(s)
- BLS Certification
- Currently enrolled in one of the following programs:
- Nursing students between second and fourth year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in their final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program.
- Occupational Therapy Students
- Physiotherapy Students
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Physical and emotional health suitable for demands of patient care
- Able to work as a team member
- Have excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Able to organize tasks within time allotted
- Able to work efficiently, effectively and safely in a controlled environment
- Aware of and acknowledge limitations within the role
- Knowledgeable of the policies and procedures directly associated with role
- Maintain confidentiality

Union: SEIU
Compensation: $21.61 - $23.81 an hour
Location: We have openings in both our South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (SMMH) located in Bracebridge and Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) located in Huntsville.
Hours of Work: Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the SEIU collective agreement.
As a condition of employment, external hires are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department.
