Description
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide therapeutic and diagnostic services in respiratory care for patients as prescribed by their most responsible providers.
- Service provision in all areas of the hospital including ICU, emergency, obstetrics, operating room, Medical/Surgical Units, dialysis, and Chronic Care such as:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Mechanical ventilator support in a team environment; neonatal, paediatric, and adult
- Airway management including endotracheal intubation
- Tracheostomy tube changes
- Therapeutic gas administration
- Aerosol and humidity therapy
- Patient evaluation
- Transport of the high risk patient
- Patient education
- Attend newborn deliveries, and provide support services to the department of anaesthesia
- Demonstrate commitment to the concepts of best practice, continuing quality improvement, and customer service.
- Responsible for performing a thorough and accurate cardiopulmonary procedure in a caring and professional manner.
- Responsible for notifying the interpreting physician of urgent or high risk findings. Initiate codes and /or emergency procedures as necessary.
- Collaborate and act as a liaison with other members of the interprofessional team.
- Understand and perform Q.A. program for equipment as appropriate.
- Assist the Internist with cardiopulmonary and special procedures within scope of practice.
- Ensure collaborative and positive working relationships with physicians and fellow staff members.
- Performs the required cardiopulmonary services (e.g. stress tests, holter administration, monitoring and analysis, ambulatory blood pressure monitor application and analysis, pulmonary function tests, home oxygen assessments, etc.) efficiently and effectively for the public in accordance with the department's procedural policies.
Technical:
- Operation of computerized technical equipment.
- Perform daily care and preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains best practice, understanding, and ability to perform appropriate infection control cleaning procedures
Administration:
- Collaborates with the interprofessional team in the development and maintenance of current policies and procedures relating to cardio-respiratory services
- Participate in the evaluation for new equipment.
Continuous Quality Improvement:
- Monitors and facilitates continuous quality initiatives within the department including risk management issues, incidents and customer service.
- Provide education for hospital staff (in-services), healthcare students, etc. when requested.
- Develop and implement new techniques with the guidance of the Internal Medicine committee as required.
- Establish and perform Q.A. program for equipment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of respiratory therapy in both theory and practice.
- Sound knowledge of all equipment and appropriate skills to operate equipment.
- Communication skills in dealing with patients, staff members and physicians.
- Organizational skills to perform required duties effectively and efficiently
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
- Registered as a Respiratory Therapist with the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario
- Current membership with the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario
- Current BCLS, ACLS, NRP
DESIRABLE EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION(S):
- TEACH Certificate Program in Tobacco Cessation (CAMH)
- Asthma/COPD Educator

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Flexible and organized individual who has the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment.
Required to provide services at all sites
Available for days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays
